BALLOON RACES & THE ENVIRONMENT - THE FACTS

There are two types of balloons - latex & foil. Only latex balloons should be used for any sort of balloon release. Latex balloons are 100% biodegradable. They are made from the sap of rubber trees which is harvested without killing the trees. A properly conducted balloon release does not harm the environment.

Approximately 90% of balloons rise to a height of about five miles, where the latex becomes brittle in the icy cold air. Air pressure decreases to the extent that the balloons expand and explode. These pieces and other balloons which fail to rise high enough, come to earth and decompose in about the same time as an oak leaf. Balloon race tickets which we use are totally biodegradable. They are light-weight, attach to the balloons without ribbons or clips and add negligible weight.
